 This year's submissions deadline is April 9th, 2008. M3F reserves the rite to extend the deadline for extenuating circumstances.

1.    M3F Inc. is a Canadian festival for students between the ages of 13 to 19, currently enrolled in Canadian secondary schools and other secondary training institutions. Scholarships and awards will be awarded to winners of the festival. 

2.    Students from countries other than Canada are eligible to submit work. Their work will be highlighted in the festival, but will not be eligible for awards or scholarships.

3.    All submission must be the original work of the person(s) whose name(s) appear on the submission documents. Sampled or appropriated images, sounds, music, etc. must be properly identified and credited.

4.    All entrants within a collaborative project must be between the ages of 13 and 19.

5.    A fully completed Project Submission Form (both actual and virtual) must accompany each and every entry.  Bodies of work may be submitted on one disc.

6.    Submissions remain the property of the creator(s).

7.    There is no set restriction on the number of submissions a single participant can submit to the Festival provided each submission is accompanied by a Project Submission Form

8.    The M3F Committee reserves the right to remove any submission it deems to be offensive or contrary to the moral or ethical standards of Canadian secondary schools.  Entrants are encouraged to avoid using language, images, or situations that may restrict how M3F might further promote their work.

9.    Entrants, while retaining all rights to their work, hereby grant the M3F Committee the right to use all or part of the entry for promotion purposes. This includes the use of stills, biographical material, names and likeness from the project and submission form.  M3F is permitted to provide copies of the entries to journalists for review, to show entries at press screenings, to exhibit entries at the festival both actual and virtual, and to include entries on the archive/Gala DVD of the festival. Copies of the archive/Gala DVD will be made available for purchase.

10.     The M3F Committee will use its best efforts to ensure that the correct title and credits are listed with the entry and on festival materials but shall not be held liable for inadvertent errors or omissions.

11.     All entrants must read and understand the submission requirements for individual categories. The M3F Committee reserves the right to move a submission from a category if it deems that the entry does not comply with the category’s requirements. The submission would be moved to a more appropriate category.

12.     Due to the timelines of the Festival and because M3F will seek further opportunities to promote the work of its participants, submissions cannot be returned. 

13.     To promote their work, Entrants hereby grant the M3F Committee the right to forward submissions to other festivals (i.e. International Teen Movie Festival) for consideration and to venues (i.e. Movieola and Pixel Gallery) for display. Entrants will retain all rights to their work and be properly identified as the creators and owners of the entry.  M3F will contact Entrants if their work is forwarded to a festival or venue outside of the Mind, Media and the Message Festival.

14.     The M3F Committee reserves the right to adjust times and dates without notice, however all efforts will be made to communicate this information to all applicants.

15.     Entrants are invited to vote for their favourite new media artworks at www.m3f.org. The submissions with the most votes from each category will become the OFFICIAL SELECTIONS of the Mind, Media and the Message Festival. The M3F Committee reserves the right to alter this process if it deems it to be necessary to do so. 

16.     There will be a maximum of 100 OFFICIAL SELECTIONS in each category. The M3F Committee reserves the right to alter the number of submissions to a category if it deems it necessary to do so.

17.     The M3F Committee reserves the right to rule on all questions not specifically addressed in the regulations.

By signing the submission form, the entrant affirms that she, he, or they, hold all necessary rights for the art work, for the submission of the project, and for granting all rights for the display and promotion of the art work to the M3F Committee, its sponsors and partners. The entrant also affirms that she or he has read and understands the rules and regulations of the festival notwithstanding  The foregoing entry of a project constitutes the agreement with the M3F rules and regulations.

In consideration of the submission(s) to the Mind, Media and the Message Festival presented by M3F inc., I for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns HEREBY WAIVE, AND FOREVER DISCHARGE the Mind, Media and the Message Festival (M3F Inc.), the Toronto Catholic District School Board, including staff and students as well as all sponsors, partners and supporters of the M3F Inc., OF AND FROM ALL claims, demands, damages, costs, expenses, actions and causes of actions whether in law or equity, in respect of loss or damage to my person or property HOWEVER CAUSED, arising or said to arise by reason of my participation in the Mind, Media and the Message Festival. I FURTHER HEREBY UNDERTAKE TO HOLD AND AGREE TO INDEMNIFY all of the aforesaid from and against any and all liability incurred by any or all of them arising as a result of, or in any way connected with my participation in the Mind, Media and the Message Festival (M3F). BY SUBMITTING THIS ENTRY, I ACKNOWLEDGE HAVING UNDERSTOOD AND AGREE TO THE ABOVE WAIVER, RELEASE, and INDEMNITY.

The animation category includes all work that is animated but in is no way interactive.  This includes all classical, digital, 2D, and 3D animations.

  • Elements that are not original must be properly identified in the credits.
  • Permission to use materials under copyright must be presented.
  • Maximum animation running length - 5 minutes.
  • Two versions of your Animation files are required,

i.    One Web ready version, uploaded.
-    MPEG or QuickTime only
-    A maximum file size of 25MB

ii.    One hard copy, mailed.
-    Tape - VHS or miniDV only
-    CD - high quality QuickTime or MPEG file

Desktop Publishing PDF Print E-mail

The DTP category includes work that is intended for print. Submissions typically will include both images and text. Design issues will have an emphasis on page, image and type layout. Submissions include posters, pamphlets, books, magazines, package designs…

  • All content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  • Elements not original must be identified.
  • Three copies of your DTP are required;

    i.      Web ready version, uploaded,
    -  JPG, GIF, or PNG only (convert PDFs to JPG, gif, png in Photoshop)
    -  A maximum of 200KB
    -  A maximum screen size of 400 pixels by 400 pixels
    -  The individual pages of a multi-page documents should be saved as individual files (label them pg1, pg2, pg3, pg4, etc).

    ii.      A Print version,
    -  40cm X 60cm maximum
    -  Unframed
    -  Unmounted

    iii.      A digital file on CD only
    -  PDF, BMP, or TIF only
    -  High resolution image

  • Only one submission per CD.

Submissions into the Illustration category will be digital drawings created for the purpose of illustrating an issue, idea, concept...  Illustrations typically accompany and complement text however, the text element is not required for this category. Bodies of work, which include two or more illustrations, may also be submitted as a series that will be adjudicated as one.

  • All content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  • Elements not original must be identified.
  • Three copies of your Illustration are required,

i.    A Web ready versions, uploaded,
-    JPG, GIF, or PNG only
-    A maximum of 200KB
-    A maximum screen size of 400 pixels by 400 pixels
ii.    A Print version,
-    40cm X 60cm maximum
-    Unframed
-    Unmounted
iii.    A digital file on CD only
-    BMP, or TIF only

Submissions into this category will be images or photographs that have been significantly altered or distort with filters and or other manipulation tools. Bodies of work, which include two or more image manipulations, may also be submitted as a series.

Included in this category would be collages or images that use multiple source files. 

(Photographs with simple tweaking of levels, focus, and/or tint are not considered significant manipulation and must be submitted to the Photography Category).

  •  All content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  •  Elements not original must be identified.
  •  Three copies of your Image are required,

i.    A Web ready version, uploaded,
-    JPG, GIF, or PNG only
-    A maximum of 200KB
-    A maximum screen size of 400 pixels by 400 pixels
ii.    A Print version,
-    40cm X 60cm maximum
-    Unframed
-    Unmounted
iii.    A digital file on CD only
-    BMP, or TIF only

The Interactive Media category includes work that is intended for the Web.  Submissions typically will include web sites, web games, and interactive web art.

  • The content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  • Elements not original must be identified.
  • All Interactive Media projects must launch in a web browser. 
  • Two copies of your Interactive Media project are required,

i. One Web ready version, uploaded
-    All elements must be uploaded.
-    Links outside of available files will not be considered part of the submission.
-    HTML or SWF files only
-    A maximum file size of 200MB
ii.    One digital file on CD only
-    All elements must be available to the CD. 
-    Links outside of available files will not be considered part of the submission.
-    HTML or SWF files only
-    Maximum file size unlimited

  • Only one submission per CD.

Submissions into the Photography category will be images that have NOT been significantly altered or distort with filters and or other manipulation tools. A series of no less than 3 photographs must be submitted for adjudication to be eligible for recognition within the top 3 works in the category.

The simple tweaking of levels, focus, and/or tint is permitted.

  • All content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  • Elements not original must be identified.
  • Three versions of your Photograph are required,

i.    Two Web ready version, uploaded,
-    JPG, GIF, or PNG only
-    A maximum of 200KB
-    A maximum screen size of 400 pixels by 400 pixels
ii.    One Print version,
-    40cm X 60cm maximum
-    Unframed
-    Unmounted
iii.    One digital file on CD only
-    JPG, or TIF only
-    High Resolution
-    Maximum file size unlimited

Podcasting *new* PDF Print E-mail

Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published (“radio shows”), and gives broadcast radio a new digital distribution method.

  • The content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form and must not include any songs not originally recorded by the producer.
  • Credits must be included on a separate form to be submitted with the submission form for the entry.
  • You must send in two versions of your podcasting,
     
i.    An uploaded file can contain up to a maximum of 5 different 7-minute segments.  In this category the entire body of work will be judged together.
ii.    A hard copy sent on a CD (MPEG 3 format) to Marshall McLuhan C.S.S.  (1107 Avenue Rd., Toronto, Ontario)
iii. Included with the hard copy submission, the printed form of the submissions and the credit form.

  • The winning Podcasts will be available for download through the M3F website onto iTunes.

Submissions into the Sound category are divided into 3 sub-categories: elecronique, concrete and open.

Electronique – A sound composition created from any source; synthesizer, concrete (digitally enhanced or manipulated), tape or sampler. Digital processing to transform sounds into something new and different is also encouraged in this category.

Concrete – sound composition, usually musical, using non-electronic sound sources as the basis. The sound sources also need to be free of processing that transforms them into something new. “Any sound that can be heard during a black out” is maybe considered for this type of composition.

Open – Intended for sound compositions of a non-musical or more experimental nature.  Sound tracks, dialogues, sound effects, sound-scapes and sound collages would best fit in this category.

  • All content and design must be the work of the individual(s) on the submission form.
  • Elements not original must be identified.
  • Two versions of your Sound files are required,

ii.    One Web ready version, uploaded,
-    MP3, WAV, or AIFF only
-    A maximum file size of 15MB
iii.    One digital file on CD only
i.    As CD tracks only
ii.    Maximum file size unlimited

  • Only one submission per CD

Submissions into the Video category include original narrative, documentary, experimental, or music videos.  

  • Elements that are not original must be properly identified in the credits.
  • Permission to use materials under copyright must be presented.
  • Maximum video running length - 10 minutes.
  • Two versions of your Movie files are required,

i.    One Web ready version, uploaded.
-    MPEG 4 or QuickTime only
-    A maximum file size of 200 MB
ii.    One hard copy, mailed.
-    Tape - VHS or miniDV only

  • Only one submission per tape.
